Revolutionary Sister Tea

In celebration of Women's History Month Africana Studies, The College of Arts and Sciences and Women Gender and Sexuality Studies invite you and interested students to a Revolutionary Sister Tea --an afternoon chat with Sis. Ericka Huggins (Black Panther Party),  Sis. Denise Oliver-Velez (The Young Lords Organization), Poet Laureate Sis. Sonia Sanchez (Black Arts Movement), and Sis. Joan Trumpauer Mulholland (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee). Traditionally, SisterTeas are gatherings where women of various ages come together to discuss the joys of life and share their experiences on navigating obstacles.  The women who have agreed to participate came of age during the nascent Civil Rights Era and all choose varying paths of activism and service which they have pursued over their life times.  Their personal struggles as mothers/partners/educators/activists are largely hidden from public accountings of the movements they shaped.  To increase our community’s awareness of some of the intricacies faced by women and people of color in our current climate, each participant has agreed to share their own special blend of life “tea.”

Our esteemed guests will be accompanied in their discussion by Prof. Robyn Spencer of Lehman college and author of The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender and the Black Panther Party in Oakland; Prof. Johanna Fernandez of Baruch College who recently assisted the NYC Police department in “finding” lost records on the prosecution of the Young Lords; and Duchess Harris of McCallister College who has authored two books for young people on Black Lives Matter and African American women mathematicians at NASA entitled Human Computers: The Black Women of NASA.
